This Document describes the BARREL Balloon 1L Magnetometer Instrument.

The BARREL Magnetometers, Model TCM2-20 Axis, made by the PNI Sensor Corp., uses three Orthogonal Magneto-Inductive Sensors and measures the three Components of the Magnetic Field with 10 nT Resolution. Serial Data are transferred to the Flight Computer, COM3. In addition, the TCM2 provides Pitch and Roll Information. This Part of the Description is adapted from Reference #1 in the Information URL List.

Each Payload will also carry a commercial three-axis Magnetometer with 50 nT Resolution sampled at 1 s Cadence. Since ground-based Magnetometers are often not available near the Balloon Locations, the onboard Magnetometer is useful for identifying Substorm Activity and ULF Oscillations of the Magnetic Field, important for investigating the ULF Timescale Modulations of Precipitation. The Magnetometer includes a Tilt Sensor to separate horizontal and vertical Components of the Magnetic Field. This Part of the Description is adapted from Reference #3 in the Information URL List.
